If you are looking for a fast WordPress theme to host your blog or your business website, I’ve compiled a list of the fasted WordPress themes in the market to help you with your decision.
All of the themes listed in this article are tested on GTMetrix and on my local server. So, you can get any of these themes and start your own website without thinking twice.
Of course, most WordPress websites that run these themes previews are un-optimized. So, if you optimize them, you might be able to score even better on these speed benchmarking tests.
Some themes might seems to score poorly on the performance test. It’s because of the fact that it has all of its features enabled and showcased on the page, plus, there’s little to no optimization done to improve the page load times.
So, let’s get started with this list right away.
Astra Pro Theme
Astra Theme has been making some noise among WordPress developers and designers for the fact that it’s super-fast and uses minimal server resources.
This makes Astra one of the most popular freemium option for a theme framework.
Yes, you can treat it as a theme framework as it is a simple theme without any fancy features out-of-the-box.
At least, in the free version.
You can upgrade to the premium version if you don’t have the time to customize the theme or build some custom design. It offers a range of ready-made templates that you can import with just a button click.
GeneratePress is my favorite minimal theme. It is also my favorite starter theme to build something powerful and fast.
Despite being a promising starter template, I can still recommend GeneratePress to people looking for a lightweight theme to create their online magazine portals.
With Elementor and starter templates, you can easily build a beautiful-looking WordPress magazine website without even touching a line of code.
Claimed to be the most customizable WordPress theme in the market, Customify is surprisingly fast and powerful at the same time. Usually, when you talk about customization, you have to compromise on your website’s speed and page load time.
Customify is a powerful theme on its own but if you want to build a unique website using a page builder, you’d be glad to learn that Customify is compatible with all major page builder including:
- King Composer
- Visual Composer
- and even Divi page builder.
Unlike any other free theme that offers such performance level, Customify also offers multiple layout customization options such as header layouts and footer layouts without any limitations.
If you are a web designer, you must have heard of OceanWP. This theme has been making noise in the WordPress community for a long time. It’s powering more than 700,000 websites and has been featured on almost all premium WordPress design and development blogs.
It’s a premium theme which comes packed with state-of-art of customer support and documentation.
The only thing that I dislike about the pricing structure is the fact that they don’t offer an unlimited plan forcing the customers to purchase more licenses after a certain number of installations.
Apart from that, you have a solid WordPress theme that you can use to power any type of WordPress website.
Divi theme is one of the oldest multipurpose WordPress themes that’s praised for its fast performance and integration with the Divi builder.
You don’t have to use the Divi builder if you don’t want to. This theme can still be used to create a powerful WordPress website.
In fact, the Divi theme is used by Yaro.Blog and many other blogs that depend on speed and website performance to increase their monthly revenue and newsletter signups.
Nobody loves a slow website.
Divi lets you build fast websites with some features such as basic shortcodes, multiple page layouts, and more.
The salient theme is another multipurpose WordPress theme that scores well on performance tests. You can easily import website demos and launch your website within a few minutes.
On top of that, you can install a Cache plugin and a WordPress optimization plugin, and increase the performance and reduce the page load time of your website dramatically.
Unfortunately, the Salient Theme doesn’t come with any free or freemium version. You will have to see this theme in action by visiting the theme demo page or purchase this theme.
Check out the demo by clicking the button below.
Veen’s developers have already showcased their speed tests and PageSpeed Insight Score right on the product page. Base on my tests, I can say that Veen is a pretty promising magazine and blog WordPress theme.
Since it is a premium offering, you can expect all the fancy features such as a theme panel, multiple archives, and single post layout, header, and footer styles.
If you are looking for a modern blog and magazine WordPress theme that loads fast on the front-end, Veen is a theme you must try.
Oh Boy! This doesn’t look good at all.
But, hear me out.
The7 Theme is a beast of a theme but on the “theme demo” page they have to showcase all the features with the best quality images and multimedia files.
So, their performance test are going to be less-impressive.
I can vouch for this theme as I have used the same to build blogs, e-commerce websites, and many business portals. They all perform well on speed tests and have been doing great on Google and other search engines.
Extra Magazine Theme
Extra is developed by Elegantthemes. Just like the Divi theme, Extra is a powerful magazine WordPress theme with ready-made blocks that you can use to build a powerful magazine website.
Some of its features include mega-menu navigation, custom sidebar widgets, magazine-style homepage with different variations which is what you need to build a decent-looking blog or magazine.
It also comes with E-Commerce support with which you can easily create a merch store or sell digital courses with ease.
Build by Themeisle, Neve is a fast, powerful WordPress theme that offers a free version with some limited features.
In the free version of the theme, you get basic customization abilities and even control the overall look of the header, main content area, and footer look but if you want to conduct extensive customization, you may want to look into the premium plans offered by Themeisle.
For a fast theme such as Neve, I wouldn’t mind investing a small amount for a lifetime plan.
Now I see a pattern here.
The fastest and powerful themes in this list are actually freemium themes. I believe that GeneratePress and Astra Pro have played a major role in transforming the entire industry into offering a free option along with a paid upgrade.
Either be the case, Zakra is a wonderful freemium theme with tons of features such as theme customizer, header and footer builder, ready-to-import demos and light-weight core which saves you some server resources.
Zakra loads within 1 second if you don’t use unnecessary plugins and overload your server.
Plus, if you don’t like the default theme customizer, you can easily use any given page builder to easily build a complex layout and web design.
Although Sydney can be used as a standalone theme, It’s one of the top choices when people look for a theme that they can use to build with Elementor page builder.
The free version comes with basic customization options and layouts, but if you upgrade, you can access a full range of options to help you control your website’s entire look & feel.
Sydney also comes packed with social media icons, icons and multiple website demos. Yes, you can access a few website demos in the free plan as well.
Uppercase is a blog/magazine WordPress theme with both light and dark modes for you to choose from. It’s a premium theme and there’s no free option available at the time of writing this article.
Newsletter popups, social media integration, transparent header, overlay navigation menu, high-lighted post and AJAX page loading are some of the many option that you get with this theme.
It’s only suitable for blogs and magazine-style websites in the fashion industry and the quirky website layout may turn away people interested in tech or some basic blog niche.
Flatsome is a premium e-commerce WordPress theme powered by WooCommerce. If I start listing all the features and options, it will make this article lengthy. So, here are some of my favorite options:
- Multiple e-commerce demos to choose from
- Clean coding
- Multiple header and footer layouts
- Advanced product filtering options
- UX builder and live theme options
- Elements library and more
With such a theme, you can power a fully-fledged e-commerce portal without hundred of products with variations and different selections.
The fast performance and page load time make this theme the perfect companion for people looking to launch a server-friendly e-commerce website.
The genesis framework has been gradually losing popularity as there are so many other great options that are more affordable and easy to use.
There are themes that you can use for free.
But, the Genesis framework is still one of the most secure WordPress themes out there with exceptional customer support and a premium template library.
Many developers and designers still use the Genesis framework to develop their client websites.
It follows all the WordPress recommendations and has a minimal code base, making it even more secure and easily customized using Genesis hooks and custom functions.
Newspaper theme is the most powerful magazine and news WordPress theme.
Newspaper is my go-theme theme for projects that require powerful layout options and customization.
On top of offering so many visual elements, it still manages to score well on the benchmarking test.
Please note that this score is for an unoptimized theme demo which means that you can reduce the page load times and increase the performance score with a WordPress optimization plugin.
Jupiter is a fast multipurpose theme that’s loaded with features and multiple read-to-import theme demos. The fact that it is a multipurpose theme and yet manages to pull these impressive benchmarking scores is just amazing.
With Jupiter, you can build a range of websites such as magazines, booking portals for hotels, business portals, and many more.
In a list dominated by minimal starter themes and basic themes, Jupiter’s theme also qualifies as a fast theme.
This is nothing short of amazing and remarkable.
Total WordPress theme is developed by my favorite WordPress Blog, WPExplorer. It is an amazing multipurpose theme that’s fast and offers so many features that you’ll not need any other WordPress theme for future projects.
With over 40+ website templates, you can build anything from a small blog to a powerful online magazine and an e-commerce store with just a single button click.
Some of the features include Easy Demo importer, Drag & Drop builder, Theme Customizer, Tons of Elements, Dynamic Layouts, and more.
The customer support is remarkable and the blog layout looks clean and easy to grasp. This makes Total a suitable theme for a number of industries and blog/magazine websites.
Since a long time, my go-to newspaper and magazine theme were either Newspaper theme or the Newsmag theme as they offered everything that I needed.
But, now I use the Newsblock on some of my niche and info websites as it offers a unique look & feels suitable for editor blogs and tech magazines.
The fact that you can enable a theme toggle button in the front-end which enables the users to switch between light and dark themes is an amazing feature.
You can use it to host your blogs but it will compliment your niche if you have a magazine-style website or a multi-authored blog with thousands of articles.
Right out of the box, this theme isn’t optimized as such but you can easily compress the files and scripts using a caching plugin and use optimized images to reduce the page load time and increase the website’s overall performance.
Hello Elementor should be considered simply a building block for the Elementor Page builder.
The theme doesn’t really have any visual elements or layout options and you will need to install Elementor Page builder to make this theme look visually pleasing.
So, long story short, it is build specifically for Elementor Page builder and if you are looking for a theme that you can use to build custom theme using Elementor page builder, Hello is the best bet.
Fastest WordPress Themes: Which one is your pick?
I had a few more items in mind but they performed poorly on speed tests and performance tests. I am pretty sure that if you optimize them the right way, they will perform well on a production website.
Anyway, if you don’t have time to spend on aggressive optimization, you can install any of the above-mentioned themes without thinking twice.
