20+Best Keyword Research Tools

Let’s be honest. Keyword research tools are the most important marketing tool that you must have in your toolkit.

Yes, you can do marketing without any keyword research tools but in order to make the most out of your investments, you need tried & tested data and these keyword research tools make sure that you focus on the right search terms without spending time working on highly competitive terms for which you may never rank for.

The real problem comes when you try to choose a keyword research tool. There are so many tools and new ones keep coming with new features and price tags.

So, to clear all the doubts, in this article, I am going to share with you some of my favorite keyword research tools that anyone from a beginner to an advanced marketing consultant can use without having to learn a lot.

Let’s get started and help you in driving the right type of traffic to your or your client’s website.

#1: Ubersuggest (Free keyword research tool for beginners)

#1: Ubersuggest (Free keyword research tool for beginners)

Ubersuggest has been around for a while. Now, it’s powered by NeilPatel.com where they let you use this wonderful tool for free. You don’t need to signup to use a few features. If you sign up, you get to keep track of your project, track keywords, keep an eye on your competitors, and of course, do keyword research.

Ubersuggest comes with 3 paid plans that you can sign up for if you don’t like the limits placed on the free versions.

With the base plan, you can track up to 100 keywords per project and you can work up to 3 projects.

One feature that the premium version offers is the historical data which is vital when you want to see how a website or your competitor has performed in the past for a particular keyword or overall traffic.

With each other premium plan, you get to add more projects and track more keywords per project.

So, why is Ubersuggest my first recommendation?

Well, it’s free and does what keyword research tools should do. For beginners with limited budgets and bloggers who only want to optimize their blogs, the free plan is more than enough.

#2: Answer The Public

02 - Best Keyword Research Tools - Answer The Public-min

Answer The Public is another great create research tool. I refer to it as a smart keyword research tool as it gives you hundreds of questions related to a particular search term that you throw at it.

So, basically, it is doing 50% of the job for you. All you need to do is pick a few questions, incorporate them inside your content and promote the article to gain maximum exposure.

If you are an enterprise-level client, you will need to upgrade to the pro version as it offers much more features such as unlimited searches, unlimited users, historical data, hide branches & suggestions, customer support, and free education packages.

That said, since I use this website to build top-notch content for my niche websites, I don’t need any pro plan. The free ones get the job done.

#3: Keyword Tool Dominator

 Keyword Tool Dominator-min

Keyword Tool Dominator pulls the search results from Google and various other search engines such as Amazon, Bing, eBay, Etsy, Walmart, YouTube, etc.

Select the search engine of your choice from the dropdown and insert your search term with some filters, and hit the search icon button.

It will show you a bunch of keywords to choose from. Or, if you want, you can create a list of keywords that you can incorporate inside your content.

You don’t need to signup to use the free version. By default, you get 2 keyword searches every day in the free version.

If you find the tool useful and satisfactory, you can signup for one of their premium plans. They don’t offer any monthly subscription plan, you can get their tools for a lifetime.

The only problem with KTD is that you’ll have to pay for each tool separately. But, you don’t need all the tools. You just need Google Keyword Tool as most people only target a single search engine, and other search engines usually show similar results.

If you run an e-commerce portal or a digital store, KTD is a wonderful tool to have as it offers several keyword research tools specifically for e-commerce enthusiasts.

WordStream-min

WordStream’s keyword tool is said to be one of the most accurate ones in the market. It retrieves its data from a number of different search engines and portals.

The keyword research tool is completely free to use but it doesn’t come with all the metrics that you’ll find with premium tools such as Ahrefs and SEMRush.

But, if you are looking for a simple tool that pumps out a number of keyword recommendations along with search volume estimate, CPC, and competition level, WordStream’s keyword research tool is a promising offering.

SEMRush

SEMRush is the most complete SEO and Marketing tool.

Not just keyword research, you can do competitor analysis, PPC, CPC, position tracking, advertising research, content gap research, ad history, listing management, site audits, on-page SEO checker, traffic analytics, and many more.

SEMRush’s keyword research is the most powerful in the business. I find its recommendations and results much more accurate and reliable.

Of course, no keyword research tool is 100% accurate but SEMRush is much better when you compare it with others.

So, why is it not the first keyword tool in this list?

It’s is expensive if all you want to is keyword research.

I only use SEMRush because I run multiple niche blogs and keeping track of progress manually without any assistance can become nerve-wracking. Since I use SEMRush, I don’t need to pay for keyword research tools, SEO audit tools, PPC tools, and more. It’s an all-in-one solution.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs used to be the go-to tool for link-building back in the day. Today, it offers a lot more tools for keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site audits, etc.

The keyword research tool comes with a keyword difficulty scale, average search volume estimates, global volumes, related search terms, and more.

No doubt, it’s a powerful keyword research tool for money-making blogs and SEO consultant.

Who should use Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is also very expensive and is suitable for enterprise-level clients or SEO freelancers who manage multiple projects at once.

That said, if you want to give it a test drive, you can sign up using the 7 day trial for just $7.

AlsoAsked-min

Also Asked is somewhat similar to Ask The Public and it also shares with you a bunch of questions that people ask on Google and other search engines.

You can use these questions and insert them strategically. This will help you in ranking for more search terms without having to create hundreds of articles.

Google AdWords Keyword Research/Planner Tool

Google Keyword Planner-min

Google AdWords offers the most accurate keyword research tool in this list. Since it comes straight from Google itself, you can bet on the result shown specifically for their advertisers and moneymakers.

If you have a few bucks to burn, you can get the exact numbers instead of a wide range of visitor data such as 1K – 3K (when you have an active campaign, you will see accurate numbers).

To make use of this tool, you will need to sign up for a Google AdWords account. You don’t have to spend money just yet. But when you set up a new campaign, you will have to spend some money to access the keyword planner.

Please note that Google keeps changing the layout and overall look & feel of the dashboard. So, please look for some articles from Google if you are confused.

Authority Labs Keyword Research Tools

Best Keyword Research Tools - Authority Labs-min

AuthorityLabs isn’t a keyword research tool. We have so many keyword research tools in this list but, sometimes you actually need a tool to track your website’s ranking and progress.

It doesn’t matter if you have the best keyword research tool but you can’t track your progress each week.

This is where AuthorityLabs comes in handy. If you already have a keyword research tool at your disposal, get started with AuthorityLabs.

SEO PowerSuite

Best Keyword Research Tools - SEO Powersuite-min

Unlike other SEO tools and keyword research tools in this list, SEO PowerSuite doesn’t run on your browser. You have to download and install the app on your computer to make it work.

I believe that desktop applications are far better performing than browser applications as browsers such as Chrome requires tremendous power to run such heavy-duty plugins.

SEO PowerSuite comes with Site auditing tools, content analysis and keyword research tool.

You have to sign up for a yearly plan and it’s pretty expensive starting at $149/year. But, if you divide the amount by 12, you are paying less than $13/month for this piece of software.

Conclusion: Best Keyword Research Tools

I know a lot of marketers that don’t prefer using any keyword research tools as it might not be the most accurate data. But, there are more than 90%+ marketers that use these keyword research tools religiously.

It is their starting point and it helps them in figuring out which keyword to target in order to drive the most traffic with the least investment.

For me, keyword research tools play a very important role when it comes to find out closely related keywords and some hidden gems that I might other miss.

I work on niche blogs about topics that I am truly passionate about so I don’t actually need topic research and keyword research but these tools help me optimizing my content, choosing the right version of the said keyword, and target a lot more people using multiple, related keywords in my articles.

If I had to vote in favor of any of the above-mentioned tools, I would recommend SEMRush and Answer The Public.

SEMRush offers reliable historical data and Answer the public shows you all the questions related to your keyword.
