Coming soon pages are used by developers, bloggers, and web designers to restrict users from seeing a broken website when they visit a newly launched portal that’s still under production.
If you let people visit and see your broken website, you will lose credibility and look unprofessional. Plus, your website/blog might share some confidential details which would open your whole server to unnecessary attacks.
To create a coming soon page, you’d have to add some codes to your .HTACCESS file or replace the index.html file with the coming soon page template.
That’s the old-school way when we didn’t have any quality coming soon plugins.
Now, you have at least a dozen of coming soon plugins that offer these features without charging a penny.
In this tutorial, I am going to use one such plugin. It’s called “Coming Soon Page“.
Let’s get started.
Step #1: Go to the WordPress plugin repository and install the “Coming Soon Page, Maintenance Mode & Landing Pages by SeedProd” plugin. It’s a free-to-use plugin with some premium features that you can ignore and we only need the free options to display a coming soon page.
Step #2: Activate the plugin and click on the “Create Your First Page” button. If you want, you can also ready their tutorial and guide to understand the functionality of the plugin in case if you get trapped in some step.
In the free version, you only get to create a “Coming Soon Page” and a “Maintenance Mode Page”. But, if you plan on upgrading, you will unlock the remaining two modules; “Login page” and “404 pages”. You can create a custom login for your WordPress website or replace the default 404 error page. Replacing the default login page can help you create a customized login page suitable for websites that allow front-end submission and multiple authors to publish content.
As far as this tutorial is concerned, you don’t need any of the premium options.
So, let’s stick with the free once and move to the next step.
Step #3: Click on the “Set up a coming soon page” or the “Set up a maintenance mode page” depending on the type of page your want to create.
If you are launching a brand new website and there are still a few settings and customizations that need to be done, you should use the “Set up a coming soon page” option.
If you already have a well-established website that needs a design refresh or some sort of modification, you will have to select the “Maintenance Mode” option.
I am going to select the “Set up coming soon page”.
Step #4: Select one of your favorite ready-made templates. You only get three options to choose from; 1) Blank page, 2) a minimal page with just text reading “Coming Soon” and a short description, and 3) Rocket Coming Soon Page template.
If you want to start from scratch and built something unique on your own, you can choose from the first two options. I would go with the third template.
Step #5: Edit the page in the editor and change the text, images and other information on the page.
Step #6: Click on the “Save” and then “Publish” button.
Note: This will not activate the coming soon page. You will need to activate the feature from the dashboard of this plugin.
Step #7: Activate the the coming soon mode from the plugin dashboard.
You will see a “Coming Soon Mode Active” button at the top right corner of your admin toolbar.
You can open Chrome’s incognito mode to see your coming soon page in action.
FAQs Related to coming soon pages

No, if your website is brand new and you haven’t submitted the sitemap.xml to Google Search Console. It’s unlikely that Google will crawl your website. So, you should be fine from an SEO point of view.
Do you need have a fancy looking coming soon page?
No, coming soon pages are for people who visit your website to see if you are offering any online presence or not. So, it doesn’t actually matter how it looks but if you are still worried, you can design a decent looking coming soon page using this plugin without spending any money.
Not to mention, the page editor also helps you to create any type of template you like. If you don’t mind spending a few bucks, you can easily choose from a collection of more than hundreds of templates.
What if I don’t want to install any plugins? How do I create a coming soon page then?
There are multiple ways to achieve this but using a plugin is by far the easiest and most secure way of doing that. Especially, if you are customizing your website on the fly.
If you don’t even have a WordPress installation active, you can use your Web hosting provider to set a coming soon page. I reckon Godaddy, Hostgator and many other hosting providers provide you with a default index.html page that shows a coming soon text.
